Blog#5 (New Year, Same ambitions)

mtaroua

Over the work period of (Jan 19 - Feb 5):

Following the winter break, the team continued to follow the gantt chart tasks to make sure that the project is on track. Furthermore, the team was also up to date with AIAA's progress with Zenith. The team also met with the new capstone supervisor (Dr.Wang) and received feedback about the project and improvements that can be integrated into future report submissions.

The team proceeded to order the small materials needed for the project (Bolts & screws)

Challenges and obstacles the team faced:

Due to the UH mechanical engineering department's machinist (Jamar Murray) being unavailable, the team had to contact an alternative machinist (Precision machinist) to receive feedback on the latest design concept and receive quotes to start the machining process in the next few weeks.

Plan for the period (Feb 6 - Feb 19):

The team plans to finalize ordering the larger components of the project in the next 2 weeks. The next step is to make minor adjustments to the CAD design such as the tolerances and cut outs so it is feasible for the machinist to work with. As shown in the parts list below (Figure 1) , the initial plan was to purchase Aluminum 7075, the team is considering to order Aluminum 6061 instead because it is easier to find and work with when compared to Aluminum 7075. The team is planning to meet with the machinist (in person) this Monday (02/07) to discuss some machining process details and make a decision between Aluminum 6061 or 7075.

Figure 2 shows the team's final CAD design that has been sent to the machinist, any minor modifications will be discussed with our project supervisor Dr. Wang during our meeting on the 14th of February.
